Southport’s Library and gallery opened in 1878 and was funded by public subscription and a philanthropic donation by William Atkinson. In 2010 Sefton council received Heritage Lottery funding to double the size of the current building and bring together all of Southport’s cultural offer in one place.
The new centre, named ‘The Atkinson’, opened its doors in 2013. Bringing together the town’s art gallery, library and theatre along with a new cinema, studio, craft shop and café. The Atkinson is a regional, British-modern culture hub with a classic collection at its heart; tourists, families, the local community and culturally aware visitors can enjoy a day out under one roof. Southport’s cultural pick’n'mix.
