Every now and then we try and take a field trip to a European city to take in the culture with a change of scenery. Amsterdam, of course, is full of inspiration for active creative minds. Architecture, art and food score feature highly on our radar – and we're always impressed with how Amsterdammers are enabled to green their streets.
“Tegel eruit, groen erin” (literally “out with the paving, in with green”) is a grassroots and city-backed movement in Amsterdam encouraging residents to replace paving stones with plants, soil, or small gardens. The idea is simple but transformative: by swapping hard surfaces for greenery, neighbourhoods become cooler, more attractive, and better able to absorb rainwater. It’s a fantastic way to turn the streets from grey to green – starting on their own doorsteps. It makes the city both healthier, more liveable and a noticeably nicer way to take in the suburbs.
